Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1898, and it has since been demolished, but we don't know when.

This place of worship is still marked with a '+' on my Derbyshire Street Atlas of 1995, but it appears now to have been demolished, and its site occupied by new housing, and a recreation area.

Its first noted appearance on Old Maps is OS 1919-1920 1:2.500, where its plot is labelled as "Mission Hall". On OS 1961 1:2,500 it is labelled as "St Martin's Church, and it has an associated Church Hall. As there seems to be a slight discrepancy between the area marked on this map and that of the earlier one, possibly a new church building was erected, and the old one used as the Hall. However the Whitwell Local History Group - Churches and Religion, which has a photograph of the church, simply refers to an extension, in 1906.

Kelly's Directory of 1932 provides the additional information that it was originally an iron Mission church of St Lawrence in Whitwell; and that it opened in 1898, was dedicated to St Martin, and had 120 sittings.

The aforementioned Whitwell Local History Group webpage says the church is still in use, but that does not appear to be the case. However the name "St Martin's" does still survive, in the name of the new housing block, "St Martin's House", and the street name opposite, "St Martin's Walk".

Denomination

Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
