Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded before 1898, but we understand it was closed before 1961, and the premises are now in secular use.

This Wesleyan Methodist Chapel (or Church) is first noted on Old Maps of 1898. To all appearances by OS 1961-1970 it has transferred into private ownership. Its closure may have coincided with the building of the M1 Motorway, which cuts across open land probably less than 200 yards to the north. The present property retains only two notable features from its former "lifetime" - a circular window in the north gable, and a pointed-arched window, with diamond-shaped glazing in the south gable, below which was, presumably, the original entrance.

OS Map of 1877, before it was built, shows that further north, along Shire Lane, was Heath (Flour) Mill - its foundations now long gone, and swept away for building the motorway.

Denomination

Now or formerly Wesleyan Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
