Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1884, and we understand it is still open.

This building is listed in Places recorded by the Registrar General under the provisions of the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855 (2010) as "Wesley Church", with an address of New Sawley, Long Eaton.

According to Kelly's Directory of 1932, part of the parish of New Sawley, together with the hamlet of Wilsthorpe, was amalgamated with Long Eaton. Certainly in the present day, it is not easy to separate the two.

The Church is built of red brick, with a three-bay front, which has a central porch, with an arched lintel above the doorway inscribed with the legend "Wesleyan Chapel". There is a large rectangular window above the porch, above which is a blue cross, edged with white, and there are tall and narrow windows on each side - quite a distinctive building.

According to the Church's website, Sawley's first Wesleyan Chapel was built in 1822, in front of where the Womens' Institute now stands, on Wilne Road. In 1871, at the time Victoria Street, was laid out, permission was sought to build a new, larger Chapel to serve an expanding population; thus the present church was erected, opening on 23rd October 1884. At that time, Sawley, New Sawley, and Long Eaton were distinct settlements, and there was open country between them.

Denomination

Now or formerly Wesleyan Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
