Cemeteries

This Church has (or had) a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1822, and we understand it is still open.

Derbyshire Record Office's Non Conformist Register Guide says a congregation was formed in 1778 at the Old Meeting House in Froggatt's Lane, moving to Soresby Street Chapel in 1822. It is believed this building is the one recorded in Kelly's Directory of 1895 as a Congregational Chapel with seating for 650, and in the IGI as "Soresby Street-independent, Chesterfield".

Note also that the DRO Guide says that a Burials register existed for the period 1792-1823, but the register has been lost.

Denomination

Now or formerly Congregational.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
