We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1903, and we understand it is still open.

This is a rather elegant building, of red brick trimmed with sandstone and blue brick. The front has two entrances, to the left of centre, both with a porch. On the left are two pairs of lancet windows with a central gable containing a larger lancet, which has an extra diamond-shaped pane above it, with a cross set into the glass. A plaque above the central entrance reads "Zion Chapel / A.D. 1903".

It is shown on Old Maps of 1916 as "United Methodist, and in 1967 as "Zion Methodist Church". As far as it is possible to tell from these Maps, it retains its original design, but an extension has now been built onto the right hand side.

On the opposite side of Warmwells Road, between it and Derby Road, was "Whiteley Pit", indicating this was one of the many "Colliery" settlements in this part of Derbyshire.

The following notice in The London Gazette of 27th July 1962 (p.6016) indicated its registration for marriages:

A Building certified for Worship named METHODIST CHURCH, Marehay, Ripley in the registration district of Belper in the county of Derby, was on 20th July 1962 registered for solemnising Marriages therein pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act, 1949, as amended by section 1(1) of the Marriage Acts Amendment Act, 1958. Dated 24th July 1962.

Now or formerly United Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
