Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1844, but we understand it was closed in 1868, and the premises are now in secular use.

Stocking Farm, located on a track past Calver Mill, on the west bank of the river Derwent, was the site of one of the early "Mill" schools. The owners of the Mill, who also owned Stocking Farm, provided a schoolroom for their child workers in an upper room of a barn belonging to the Farm, Anglican Church services being held in the same part of the building as the schoolroom.

The details may be traced in a return to the Religious Census of 1851 (HO 129/449/1/4/9) for "a large room above a stable" in Calver Township, which was "Licensed for divine Service according to the rites of the Church of England in 1844". The estimated congregation on March 30th was 50 in the afternoon, with 50 Sunday Scholars - the same as the yearly average. The return was completed by A. Auriol Barker, Minister, of "Baslow, Chesterfield".

The barn remained licensed for divine service until All Saints Church, Curbar was opened in 1868; whilst the bell, from the bell-cote attached to the barn, was transferred to Curbar National School in 1871.

Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
