Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1973, and we understand it is still open.

This building is the former London Road Methodist Church, dating from 1890. It was closed for Methodist worship in 1973, and was taken over by the Pentecostal Church, for which the following notice in The London Gazette of 18th January 1973 (p.816) was published:

A Building certified for worship named BUXTON PENTECOSTAL CHURCH, London Road, Buxton, in the registration district of Chapel-en-le-Frith, in the County of Derby, was on 5th January 1973, registered for solemnizing marriages therein pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act, 1949 as amended by section 1(1) of the Marriage Acts Amendment Act, 1958. Dated 11th January 1973.

At some point thereafter it became known as Buxton New Life Christian Centre, with an Assemblies of God congregation, and it is recorded as such in Places recorded by the Registrar General under the provisions of the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855 (2010). A notice of cancellation of its registration as "New Life Christian Centre, London Road, Buxton" was published in the Gazette of 10th September 2010 (p.0).

Currently, however it is the home of 'Buxton Community Church', who have met previously in a number of different places in Buxton, including an Anglican Church, and Charis House, in Hardwick Square East, Buxton, headquarters of the charity 'Good News Family Care'. According to their website, they have been meeting in the London Road building since 2008; are members of the Evangelical Alliance, and part of the 'Salt and Light' group of churches. The building is also registered for marriages - the appropriate notice, for "BUXTON COMMUNITY CHURCH, in the registration district of High Peak", being published in the Gazette of 11th May 2010 (p.0).

Denomination

Now or formerly Assemblies of God.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
