Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1908, and we understand it is still open.

There is a datestone on this building above the doorway showing 1908. It is shown (with a '+') as place of worship on my OS Map of 1953, but not on my OS Street Atlas for Derbyshire, 1995, though it is still open. Conversely there are '+' shown adjacent to the schools at Stancliffe Hall, and St Elphin's in Darley Dale, which do not appear on the 1953 map.

It is an elegant building, as befitting the name, as given in the following notice in The London Gazette of 12th July 1918 (p.8221) recorded its registration for marriages:

A Separate Building, duly certified for religious worship, named PRIMITIVE METHODIST CENTENARY MEMORIAL CHURCH, situated at Upper Hackney, in the civil parish of Darley, in the county of Derby, in Bakewell registration district, was, on the eighth July, 1918, registered for solemnizing marriages therein, pursuant to 6th and 7th Wm. IV, c.85. Dated 9th July 1918.

The Centenary referred to is presumably that of the foundation of the Primitive Methodist Circuit. Apparently according to the Derbyshire Churches and Chapels website it was a replacement for an early 19th century chapel, which at the time of writing of that webpage content (1999) was still to be seen nearby. Old Maps indicate that after it was replaced by the new building, it became a Sunday School.

Denomination

Now or formerly Primitive Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
