We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1869, and we understand it is still open.

An account of the history of this building is available on the Leicestershire Villages website. Briefly, it was erected in 1869, as a combined Chapel and school room. Methodists were to provide education for the village until Leicestershire County Council took over the school rooms as a 'public elementary school' on lease, in 1907.

It is shown on Old Maps, for example OS 1885 1:2,500 as a Chapel (without denomination) and School. A Methodist Chapel (Wesleyan Reform) on the east side of Silver Street is also shown, but the latter appears now to have been demolished. Both are mentioned in Kelly's Directory of 1895, as well as a Primitive Methodist Chapel, marked on the OS Map as being in what is now School Street.

Oakthorpe was a hamlet in the parish of Donisthorpe, and together with Donisthorpe was transferred from Derbyshire to Leicestershire in 1897.

Now or formerly Wesleyan Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church is located at OS grid reference SK3214112890. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

(NB I know the first two don't work as intended - the Jury's still out as to what to do about it...)
