Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded before 1880, though it is now closed, but we don't yet know when.

The plaque on the gable is not readable, unfortunately, but the house is now known as #2 Chapel Mews. It is marked on OS Maps, eg 1880 1:500 as "Methodist Chapel (Primitive) (Seats for 250), and at that time stood in isolation on the corner of a road named "Back Hollow".

Said to have been built in the late 18th century/early 19th century, and recorded as Zion Methodist Church, Holbrook Road, it is now a Grade I Listed Building - see British Listed Buildings website for details.

Kelly's Directory of 1932 records that Belper had 2 Primitive Methodist Chapels, one at Field Head and the other at Cow Hill. This doesn't appear to fit the description of either of them!

Denomination

Now or formerly Primitive Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Derbyshire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
