Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1888, and we understand it is still open.

According to an account of "Religion - Patchway East" on the Domesday Reloaded website, Patchway Baptist Church was built in 1974.

This was not the first Baptist Church for Patchway, as one is mentioned in Kelly's Directory of 1923, and the same one, or a later building is marked on various old Maps between 1935 and 1972 on the north east corner of Gloucester Road and Brookfield Road, just south of its present site, adjacent to the bridge taking the A38 over the railway line. Possibly it was demolished for road widening, as the bridge is now dual carriageway.

In relation to the above, the following notice was published in The London Gazette of 14th October 1974 (p.8953):

The Registrar General being satisfied that BAPTIST CHAPEL, High Road, Patchway, Almondsbury in the registration district of Thornbury in the County of Avon is no longer used as a place of worship by the congregation on whose behalf it was on 3rd January 1931 registered for marriages in accordance with the Marriage Act 1836 has cancelled the registration. Dated 30th July 1974.

Possibly "High Road" was an early name for Gloucester Road by the railway bridge - I have not found it recorded elsewhere.

Certainly a Baptist presence in Patchway has been recorded before a building's appearance on Old Maps, as The Baptist Handbook for 1896, available from The Internet Archive, mentions a chapel erected in Patchway in 1888, having 220 seats.

Denomination

Now or formerly Baptist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
