Cemeteries

We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1833, but we understand it was closed before 1986, and the premises are now in secular use.

The return to the Religious Census of 1851 (HO 129/327/2/2/22) for "Wesleyan Chapel, Batch", indicates a popular meeting place, with free seating for 250, and 350 "other" sittings. It was said to be erected in 1833 as a separate building, used exclusively for religious worship. An average congregation of 200 attended morning services, and 450 the evening, with 240 Sunday Scholars to morning classes, and 100 attending in the evenings. The return was completed by James Meadmore, its Minister, who lived at "Downend, Near Bristol". He also completed the return for Bethel Chapel, Downend (HO 129/327/2/1/8), where morning and evening services were also held, but for a smaller congregation (150 and 200).

According to Paul Townsend's Warmley Historical Timeline 1086-1999 (where it is listed as "Warmley Methodist Church"), it became "Mary Help of Christians", for which see the separate entry in this database. The latter was itself closed in 1998, and since then has been converted into housing.

Denomination

Now or formerly Wesleyan Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
