Church History

This Cemetery or Burial Ground was founded in 1679, but we understand it was closed before 1884.

The Bristol Town Plan of 1885 shows this Burial Ground set within a block bounded on the north by Red Cross Street, on the east by Red Cross Lane, on the south by Old Market Street, and on the west by "Captain Careys Lane". The latter was a continuation of Haberfield Street, both now subsumed by Temple Way.

Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Gloucestershire (1986) reports that a plot of land in Red Cross Street was purchased jointly by the Broadmead, and Old King Street Baptist chapels in 1679 for a burial ground. This appears to fit that description.

Today it appears to be a car park and garden area for the surrounding buildings.

Denomination

Now or formerly a Cemetery (Baptist).

In most cases this will be a record of its original consecration.
