Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1837, but we understand it was closed in 1980, and the premises are now in secular use.

This place of worship first came to my attention in a return to the Religious Census of 1851 (HO 129/338/5/8/11). This was for a congregation of Calvinistic Methodists, who met in a Day School, which was erected in 1837. There was free seating for 70, and an estimated 65 worshippers attended evening congregation on March 30. The return was completed by Robert Lucas, the Schoolmaster. His address was "Kings Court, Rodborough, Gloucestershire".

The School is marked on several Old Maps, and though obviously closed as a school, the building is still in existence today. There is a plaque on its gable which reads "Kings Court / School / MDCCCXXXVII".

Its closure as a place of worship was recorded in The London Gazette of 24th March 1980 (p.4547) as one of the buildings which "have wholly ceased to be used as places of worship by the congregations on whose behalf they were certified in accordance with the Places of Religious Worship Certifying Act 1852, or Places of Worship Registration Act 1855". Its original certification was dated 19th December 1860.

Denomination

Now or formerly Calvinistic Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
