Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1958, and we understand it is still open.

An account of Bristol's Sikh Temple's history provided by its website records that it was first established in 1958 in St Mark's Road, Easton. The present building in Fishponds Road, was acquired in 1977, and is managed by a group of Trustees.

The account mentions that the building was once Offices and staff accomodation belonging to the Bristol Omnibus Company. Interestingly, Old Maps show the premises next door to the Temple, on the left were a Tramway Depot in 1903, and by 1951-2 an Omnibus Depot. The site of the former Depots is now occupied by a block of flats.

The following notice in The London Gazette of 19th May 1980 (p.7259) indicates the Temple's registration for marriages:

A building certified for worship named Sikh Temple, 71-75 Fishponds Road, Eastville in the registration district of Bristol in the Non-Metropolitan County of Avon was on 28th April 1980 registered for solemnizing marriages therein pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act 1949, as amended by section 1(1) of the Marriage Acts Amendment Act 1958. Dated 13th May 1980.

Denomination

Now or formerly Sikh.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
