Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1960, and we understand it is still open.

St Peter & St Paul's Greek Orthodox Church was built originally for an Anglican congregation in 1847, and dedicated to St Simon. Its present appearance is certainly distinctive, with its stub of a broach spire; this however was a consequence of lopping in 1996, and topping with a cross. This was a safety measure, as the spire, originally 121ft high, had become unsafe.

The church has a nave, chancel, a north aisle, with a chapel, and a small south vestry. Unusually, the tower supporting the spire is attached at the north-east corner of the north aisle.

During the post-War years, its Anglican congregation slowly dwindled, so it was declared redundant, closing on 18th March 1960. The Greek Community had been sharing the building since 1958, and they continued to use it after its Anglican congregation left. In 1963, its dedication was changed to St Peter & St Paul, and in 1978, it was purchased outright.

The following notice in The London Gazette of 22nd May 1991 (p.7933) records its registration for marriages:

A building certified for worship named GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH of St. Peter and St. Paul, Lower Ashley Road, Bristol, in the registration district of Bristol, in the Non-Metropolitan County of Avon, was on 10th May 1991 registered for solemnizing marriages therein pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act 1949 as amended by section 1(1) of the Marriage Acts Amendment Act 1958. Dated 15th May 1991.

There is more information, including a fascinating account of the history of the Greek Community in Bristol, on the Greek Orthodox Church of St Peter & St Paul website.

Denomination

Now or formerly Greek Orthodox.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
