Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1860, but we understand it was closed before 1902.

This place of worship came to my attention in the book Bristol and Its Environs (1875), published by the British Association, under their listing of places of worship for Congregationalists. The Bristol Town Plans of 1885 show Salmon Street was the west side of a square formed by Paul Street, Alfred Place and Walker Street, beginning at 32 Paul Street. Only Paul Street survives now as a modern street name.

The Mission Room was on the right side of Salmon Street just prior to its junction with Walker Street, which lay parallel to Paul Street. There is no mention of the number of seats.

Interestingly, by the time Kelly's Directory of Bristol of 1902 was printed, the single place of worship, one of only two addresses listed in Salmon Street, was recorded as a City Mission Hall. By 1914, there were more addresses, with the place of worship labelled more simply as "Mission Chapel".

According to a list of Places of Worship on the Bristol & Avon Family History Society website, the Salmon Street Congregational Mission was founded in 1860.

Denomination

Now or formerly Congregational.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
