Cemeteries

We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded before 1855, but we understand it was closed by 1884.

This place of worship first came to my attention in the following notice in The London Gazette of 26th July 1861 (p.3166):

NOTICE is hereby given, that a separate building, named the Castle Green Methodist New Connexion Chapel, situate at Castle Green, Castle Precincts, in the city and county of Bristol, in the district of Bristol, being a building certified according to law as a place of religious worship, was, on the 17th day of July, 1861, duly registered for solemnizing marriages therein, pursuant to the Act of 6th and 7th Wm. IV., cap. 85. Dated 23rd July 1861.

Ashmead's Maps of Bristol of 1855 and 1874 show two buildings labelled as "Chapel", on opposite sides of Castle Green, both around the same size. One, on the south side, is known to have been Castle Green Congregational Church, so I have concluded the other, on the north side, was the above Methodist Chapel. By the time OS Maps of the 1880s were published, whilst both buildings were, apparently, still in situ, only the (site of) the Congregational Church is labelled. From this, I have concluded that the Methodist Church had closed by then.

The Chapel is not, to the best of my knowledge, mentioned in any other documentary sources.

Denomination

Now or formerly New Connexion.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
