Cemeteries

This Church has (or had) a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1315, and we understand it is still open.

St Mary the Virgin's Church is a Grade II Listed Building - see the British Listed Buildings website for details.

It was consecrated in 1315, is largely 14th century, with 15th century chapels, tower and porch; but has the honour of being restored twice in the Victorian era - about 1850 by Francis Niblett, and again 1868-70 by Henry Woodyer.

The leaden font, described as "Romanesque", and probably mid to late 12th century by the aforementioned website is believed to be one of six in Gloucestershire cast from the same mould. The others which are known about are at Tidenham, Sandhurst, Siston, and Lancaut, the latter now in the Lady Chapel in Gloucester Cathedral. It is not yet known where the other one is.

To find out more about St Mary's, and about Frampton on Severn itself (its "Parish Profile"), you may wish to visit its webpage on the website of the Severnside Benefice.

The following information about the Church has been provided to accompany the photographs on the right. A list of people who have supplied the information is included in the Acknowledgements, below.
