Cemeteries

We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded about 1833, though it is now closed, but we don't yet know when, and the premises are now in secular use.

The return to the Religious Census of 1851 (HO 129/343/2/5/6) records a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Alderton, erected as a separate building about 1833. There were free sittings for 86, and 24 "other" sittings. The average number of attendees to Divine Service were 60 in the afternoons, and 65 in the evenings, with an average number of 26 Sunday Scholars to classes in the afternoon. The returning officer was James Timbrell, "apointed by the Minister", who lived at "Alderton near Beckford". He remarked that there was no evening service on March 30th 1851.

According to the Victoria County History series: A History of the County of Gloucester, Volume 6: Slaughter hundred, and the upper divisions of Tewkesbury and Westminster hundreds (1965), pp.189-197 (Alderton with Dixton), the original building was opposite the Rectory, but was replaced by the present "relatively large brick building on the north side of the village in 1899". They cite it as well attended in 1962, when it was served from Winchcombe.

It is now closed however, and has been converted into private ownership.

Denomination

Now or formerly Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
