Cemeteries

This Church had a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1717, but we understand it was closed after 1818.

According to Dave Hedges Pages, the first Baptist Church in Wotton dates from 1717, was to be found on Ludgate Hill, and had its own graveyard. This building appears to have been superseded by the Baptist Church in Rope Walk, built in 1818, but from its early days until relatively recent times, the Baptist Church in Wotton was known as 'The Particular Baptist Church of Christ', and membership was strictly limited to "totally immersed" members only. Denomination

Now or formerly Baptist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
