We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1941, and we understand it is still open.

When new housing was being built to the West of the railway line, a Deacon from St Barnabas's Church in Stroud Road was given special responsibility for the developing area, and services were begun in the estate office in Randwick Road, in February 1941.

The first building to be dedicated to St George was made of wood. It was given to the mission by Mrs. A.M. JEUNE of Whaddon, where it had been the church hall. It was dismantled and moved to a site in Grange Road in 1942. This was replaced by a temporary church in 1947.

St George's continued to be 'under the wing' of St Barnabas until 1948, when it became a Conventional District; then later (in 1967) it became a parish in its own right. The present church was built and consecrated in 1956. It was designed originally as a church hall, but it has been altered and enlarged since then. Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
