Cemeteries

This Church has (or had) a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1747, and we understand it is still open.

Thornbury Baptist Church website provides the information that Baptist services in Thornbury date back to 1747, with the first permanent church building opening in May 1789. It also says this continued in use until 1989, when the new building (the main church centre) was completed, at which time the old building became the youth centre.

This does however conflict with information provided elsewhere. Kelly's Directory states that in 1923 there was a Baptist Chapel in St John Street, erected in 1828. Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Gloucestershire (1986) confirms a date of 1828, but says that the chapel was at Gillingstool, which is where the present building is.

Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Gloucestershire (1986) also draws a comparison between the Baptist Meeting House and the Congregational Chapel in Chapel Street, saying it is "generally similar to the last, but with round-arched windows". The Congregational Chapel had been built 2 years before, in 1826.

The Baptist Church is a Grade II Listed Building; their account confirms the NCC date of 1828 - see the British Listed Buildings website for details. So does the information recorded in the leaflet South Gloucestershire Nonconformist Heritage Trail (PTE050151.pdf) available (in 2013) on South Gloucestershire Council website - "the chapel building of 1828 stands in its burial ground with a suite of new buildings attached to the rear..."

Denomination

Now or formerly Particular Baptist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Gloucestershire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
