Cemeteries

This Church has (or had) a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in the 12th century, and we understand it is still open.

St Michael's Church is a Grade I Listed Building - see British Listed Buildings website for details. Bulley is described under its own heading as a parish in Kelly's Directory of 1923, but with its living as a chapelry annexed to the vicarage of Churcham. The two parishes are on opposite sides of the A40 trunk road between Ross on Wye and Gloucester.

The following information about the Church has been provided to accompany the photographs on the right. A list of people who have supplied the information is included in the Acknowledgements, below.

[Image 1] A Church with much original Norman work, rescued as old photos inside show from near dereliction in 1886-7. It looks very “Home Counties” with its pretty bell turret with shingled spire. The setting is delightful.[1]

[Image 2] Much smaller than its companion, St Andrew's Church, Churcham, St Michael's has a fine doorway and (as can be seen on this photograph) an unusual Chancel Arch of banded stone.[1]

Denomination

Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
