Church History

This Cemetery or Burial Ground was founded in 1877, and we understand it is still open.

Eckington's Cemetery is recorded by Kelly's Directory of 1912 as opened in 1877. It was then of about 6 acres, "divided into separate parts for the Established Church, Catholics and Dissenters", and (then) under the control of the Burials Committee of the Parish Council.

This was clearly set out as a substantial cemetery. In comparison, the Market Hall was similarly ambitious: "a plain but substantial edifice of brick and stone, erected by Mr. Joseph Barber", opened two years later, in 1879, when it contained "several sale shops, over which are assembly rooms, fitted with a stage, and having attached ante-rooms: the assembly rooms are used for concerts and entertainments, and will seat 1,500 persons; the large market hall is 75 feet long by 66 wide".

Now or formerly a Cemetery.

In most cases this will be a record of its original consecration.

This Cemetery is located at OS grid reference SK4331980145. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:
