Cemeteries

We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1815, but we understand it was closed in 1970.

This chapel is recorded by Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Derbyshire (1986) as a Congregational Chapel, dated 1814, refitted in the late 19th century, and closed c.1970. An OS Map dated 1880 1:2,500 labels it as "Independent Methodist", but other sources, such as Kelly's Directory of 1895, and later OS Maps confirm it as Congregational.

Today it is part of a plot of land in private ownership, but can be seen from the road. It was built of brick with sides of two bays, and a small front porch. Above the porch, at the apex is a circular opening which may have been glazed. It is small, about 20ft by 10ft, but according to Kelly's Directories it would have seated 120, so perhaps it was bigger, originally.

Denomination

Now or formerly Congregational.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
