We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1860, and we understand it is still open.

As the additional notes below explain, a Primitive Methodist society was in existence in Calver by 1822, and a Sunday School was begun in 1833, but the first meetings of adults did not take place until 1856 - too late for a return to be made the Religious Census in 1851. The present building was erected 4 years later.

The following notice in The London Gazette of 21st June 1935 (p.4021) recorded its registration for marriages:

A Separate Building, duly certified for religious worship, named JUBILEE METHODIST CHAPEL, situated at Calver, in the civil parish of Calver, in Bakewell registration district, in the county of Derby, was, on the 14th June, 1935, registered for solemnizing marriages therein, pursuant to 6 & 7 Will. IV, c.85. Dated 17th June 1935.

Note: "Jubilee" refers to the Jubilee Conference of the Primitive Methodists, held in Tunstall (Staffordshire), where its first Chapel had opened, in 1811.

Now or formerly Primitive Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
