Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1889, but we understand it was closed about 1962.

Woodville had 2 19th century Methodist Chapels. This one, in Chapel Street, is recorded in Kelly's Directory of 1895 as built in 1889. It is marked on Old Maps from 1901, when it is next to a Pottery, in 1923 named as "Victoria Pottery (Art Ware)" until 1937, by which time the Pottery was disused. Between 1960 and 1975 it is labelled as "Chapel of Rest"; however in the present day, it has been demolished, and its site is now occupied by a modern residential development.

Derbyshire Record Office's Non-Conformist Register Guide includes a register of baptisms for the period 1937-1962.

Denomination

Now or formerly Primitive Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
