Cemeteries

This Church has (or had) a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1843, and we understand it is still open.

This is an interesting building, rectangular, with the shorter side facing the road, in which there is a rectangular window with 3 lights. The north side, of 4 bays, has 3 windows and a doorway, to which (to all appearances) an additional bay was added, with another doorway, and 2 windows, one above the other. The south side must have been the same originally, but has a small extension added at the front, with a chimney, giving it a "cottage like" appearance from the front.

There is a sizeable Burial Ground surrounding the Church, on the north and east sides, with memorials intact. This is shown on Old Maps to have been laid out by 1878.

Derbyshire Record Office's Non-Conformist Register Guide includes a register of baptisms, 1907-1992, and of marriages 1919-1992; and a note that the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel was founded in 1843, and rebuilt in 1866. This is confirmed in the return to the Religious Census of 1851 (HO 129/448/1/9/32), which records a separate building erected in 1843, used exclusively as a place of worship, with no free sittings, 18 which were "paid for", and standing room for 100. In spite of what must have been considerable discomfort for those who had to stand, the estimated congregation on March 30th was 16 to afternoon service, and 27 in the evening, with a Sunday School class attendance of 41 in the morning, and 26 in the afternoon.

Denomination

Now or formerly Wesleyan Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
