We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded before 1945, and we understand it is still open.

It is not known when this building in Thanet Street was built by the Latter-day Saints, but the following notice in The London Gazette of 9th January 1968 (p.354) provides a clue:

A Building certified for worship named REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS, Thanet Street, Clay Cross, in the registration district of Chesterfield in the county of Derby was on 2nd January 1968 registered for solemnising marriages therein pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act, 1949 as amended by section 1(1) of the Marriage Acts Amendment Act, 1958. Dated 4th January 1968.

In the same issue, the registration for marriages of the building known as the REORGANIZED CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS in Revill Street, Clay Cross was cancelled, having been registered originally on 20th March 1945.

Fortunately, a helpful Wikipedia article on the Community of Christ tells us it was formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS). The movement was formed in the US in 1860, as a simple "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints", adding the word Reorganized to the title in 1872, and changing to its current name in 2001.

Places recorded by the Registrar General under the provisions of the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855 (2010) also lists a Church Hall in Market Street, Clay Cross, registered to them, but I was unable to find it on any maps.
