Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1851, and it has since been demolished, but we don't know when.

The return to the Religious Census of 1851 (HO 129/446/5/1/7) provides information of a Lecture Room in "Redlion Yard", Alfreton, with a congregation of Wesleyan Reform, which was erected in February 1851 as a separate building used exclusively as a place of worship. There were free seats for between 240 and 300, and 60 "other" sittings, and no standing room. The estimated congregation on March 30th was 100 in the afternoon and 158 in the evening, with 59 Sunday Scholars, whereas the average congregation for the last month had been 800 attending services, and 290 Sunday Scholars. The return was completed by Joshua Birley, its Steward, who gave his address as "Gardener Alfreton, Derbyshire".

The Red Lion Pub is shown on Old Maps of 1953-1962 at 4 High Street. The building, if it is the original, is now retail premises.

Denomination

Now or formerly Wesleyan Reform.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Derbyshire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
