Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1876, and we understand it is still open.

It goes against the grain somewhat to include Abbeydale in a database of Derbyshire Churches, but nevertheless, it was part of Derbyshire in the past, and is included as such in Kelly's Directories of Derbyshire as late as 1932. Abbeydale St John was said to be an ecclesiastical district formed in 1878 out of portions of Dore and Norton parishes. The church of St John the Evangelist was built in 1876 by John Roberts esq. of Abbeydale Park. It is "an edifice in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, organ chamber, vestry, south porch and an eastern turret containing one bell". All the windows are stained - two on the north side of the nave are memorials. In 1927, a baptistery in which are three memorial windows was added at the west end to commemorate the jubilee of the church. There are 220 sittings.

The living was then a vicarage, in the gift of trustees, and had been held since 1904 by the Rev. John Arnold Kerfoot B.A. of London University, who was also a surrogate.

St John's Parish Rooms were erected in 1893, for which see the separate entry in this database.

St John's does not have a graveyard, but a Garden of Remembrance was erected in 1972. Records of baptisms 1876-1996, and marriages 1878-1992 are held by Sheffield Archives.

There are some nice photographs on the Parish of Abbeydale and Millhouses (Sheffield) website.

Denomination

Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

Resources

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Abbeydale Park (Dore), and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.

Search for other Places of Worship in Derbyshire, or in another County in this Database

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

Search Tips:

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. If you specify a Grid Reference, Places of Worship in the immediate vicinity will be listed, in order of distance from the Grid Reference supplied. The default is to list 10, but you can specify How Many you want to see, up to a maximum of 100.

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Derbyshire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
