Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded after 1955, and we understand it is still open.

St Anthony's is a modest rectangular building set on a plot bounded by Sandby Drive, Raeburn Road and Norton Avenue (A6102). It is a Chapel of Ease of Our Lady of Lourdes, in Hackenthorpe, which opened in 1957, and was registered for marriages the same year. The notice of a similar registration for St Anthony was published in The London Gazette of 4th December 1964 (p.10365):
A Building certified for worship named ST. ANTHONY'S CHURCH, Raeburn Road in the registration district of Sheffield in the county borough of Sheffield, was on 27th November 1964, registered for solemnising marriages therein pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act, 1949, as amended by section 1(1) of the Marriage Acts Amendment Act, 1958. Dated 1st December 1964.
The Gleadless Valley Estate was developed by the Sheffield City Council during the post-war period 1955-1962. For further details see Gleadless Valley on Wikipedia.

Search Tips:

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. 'Multi-denominational' includes Ecumenical Partnerships, and 'Miscellaneous' means anything not covered by other broad classes.
