Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1889, though it is now closed, but we don't yet know when.

This is next door to Bethel Seventh-Day Adventist Church. There are 3 plaques above its ground floor bays. The one on the left reads 'Memorial Stone laid by Councillor James HILL, September 18??' The middle one (photographed in close-up) reads 'Baptist Centenary Mission Room & School', with a date of 1889. The other plaque is too far away to read from photographs.

Two more photographs show the glass panel above the front door, which reads 'GLAD TIDINGS HALL +'. One shows it from the outside, the other (more readable) from inside, with the wording in reverse. The building is now in secular use as an office/workshop, and it is believed the present owners intend to have the panel renovated. Thanks to Mike Berrell for this information.

It is listed as a Place of Worship (as 'Baptist, Boyer Street') in Kelly's Directories of 1895, 1912 and 1932 in the 'Mission Halls' section. Boyer Street also had a Mission Room for Christ Church as well, possibly affiliated with Christ Church in Normanton Road?

In more recent years, Places recorded by the Registrar General under the provisions of the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855 (2010), lists 2 other entries in Boyer Street, besides Bethel Seventh Day Adventist Church. One is recorded as a "Pentecostal Assembly Chapel", with a Pentecostal Assembly congregation; the other is "The Revival Deliverance Ministry", with a congregation of "Christians not otherwise designated". Perhaps one of these entries refers to the premises which were the "Glad Tidings Hall", as there appear to be no other places of worship in Boyer Street.

Denomination

Now or formerly Baptist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

Resources

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Derby, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.

Search for other Places of Worship in Derbyshire, or in another County in this Database

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

Search Tips:

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. If you specify a Grid Reference, Places of Worship in the immediate vicinity will be listed, in order of distance from the Grid Reference supplied. The default is to list 10, but you can specify How Many you want to see, up to a maximum of 100.

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Derbyshire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
