Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1934, and we understand it is still open.

The Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Dronfield website tells us that prior to 1934, Dronfield Catholics would have needed to travel to either St Wilfrid's Church in Sheffield, or the Annunciation Church in Chesterfield for worship. However that year marked the first celebration of Mass in Dronfield itself, held in an upper room of the White Swan Inn. "This continued until 1949 when a disused Methodist chapel on Snape Hill was given to Dronfield Catholics by George Lunt of Woodseats".

Dronfield separated from its mother church, Our Lady of Beauchief & St Thomas of Canterbury in the 1961, and became an independent RC parish. It became essential therefore that Dronfield should have its own building, and by 1962, planning permission had been obtained for development of land on Stonelow Road.

The following notice in The London Gazette of 6th March 1962 (p.1889) recorded the registration of the existing premises:

A Building certified for Worship named CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, Sheffield Road, Dronfield in the registration district of Chesterfield in the county of Derby, was on 1st March 1962 registered for solemnising Marriages therein pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act, 1949, as amended by section 1(1) of the Marriage Acts Amendment Act, 1958. Dated 2nd March 1962.

The first Mass was celebrated in the new dual-purpose church-hall on 27th January 1967, and it official opening held on 24th September 1967 that year. A similar notice to the above, for "CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, Stonelow Road, Dronfield" was published in the Gazette of 2nd March 1967 (p.2466), followed by a notice on the following page, cancelling the registration of the Sheffield Road premises.

Holy Spirit Church celebrated its silver jubilee in 1992.

Denomination

Now or formerly Roman Catholic.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
