Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1890, and we understand it is still open.

The Roman Catholic Church in Bakewell, at the time of publication of Kelly's Directory of 1932, was situated in Granby Road, and was said to have been built in 1890, and an iron structure, dedicated to the English Martyrs, and served from Hassop.

This partnership still holds good today - English Martyrs in Bakewell, and All Saints in Hassop together constitute the Catholic parish of All Saints and English Martrys, in the Diocese of Nottingham.

Their parish website provides the information that the Bakewell Church was erected in 1890, but this may be a bit misleading, as the present building is not the original, but rather, a Chapel built originally for the Independents, when Buxton Road was known as "Mill Street". It is not known when the transfer took place, but it would appear to be after 1955 and before 1970, according to its placement on Old Maps. Inevitably, since then, the original "iron structure" has been demolished.

Although a notice was published in The London Gazette of 13th October 1837 (p.2623) announcing the certification of All Saints in Hassop for marriages, none has been found for English Martyrs, so it would appear that marriages take place at Hassop only.

Likewise, Derbyshire Record Office's Non-Conformist Register Guide mentions records for Hassop only.

Denomination

Now or formerly Roman Catholic.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

Resources

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Bakewell, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Derbyshire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
