We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded by 1879, but we understand it was closed in 1966, and the premises are now in secular use.

Matlock United Methodist Church is referred to in Derbyshire Record Office's Non-Conformist Register Guide as "Imperial Road Methodist Church", and "sometimes known as Matlock Bridge, or Matlock Bank Church before 1932" - a tad confusing, perhaps, when their list also includes the separate "Matlock Bank Methodist Church", in Bank Road.

Ann Andrews, on her excellent webpage devoted to of Matlock Churches and Chapels, explains that the foundation stone of the present building was laid in 1910, and it was opened in June the following year. This was evidently a replacement for an earlier building, as the Guide refers to baptism records for a period beginning in 1879.

The following notice in The London Gazette of 7th May 1912 (p.3313) recorded its registration for marriages:

A Separate Building, duly certified for religious worship, named UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, situated at Imperial-road, in the civil parish of Matlock, in the county of Derby, in Bakewell registration district, was, on the 3rd May, 1912, registered for solemnizing marriages therein, pursuant to 6th and 7th Wm. IV, c.85. Dated 4th May 1912.

The above-mentioned Guide includes records of baptisms 1879-1965, and marriages 1913-1964, and a note that it was closed in 1966. And indeed, a notice of cancellation of the registration for marriages of "METHODIST CHURCH, Imperial Road, Matlock" was published in the Gazette of 1st March 1966 (p.2341).

Since then, it has been converted into a Community Centre, and is now known as the Imperial Rooms.

Now or formerly Free/United Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Matlock, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
