Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1869, and we understand it is still open.

In 2011, when this account was first prepare, an account of the history of Oakthorpe Methodist Church was available on a "Leicestershire Villages" website, which has since closed. Briefly, it was erected in 1869, as a combined Chapel and school room. Methodists were to provide education for the village until Leicestershire County Council took over the school rooms as a 'public elementary school' on lease, in 1907.

It is shown on Old Maps, for example OS 1885 1:2,500 as a Chapel (without denomination) and School. A Methodist Chapel (Wesleyan Reform) on the east side of Silver Street is also shown, but the latter appears now to have been demolished. Both are mentioned in Kelly's Directory of 1895, as well as a Primitive Methodist Chapel, marked on the OS Map as being in what is now School Street.

Oakthorpe was a hamlet in the parish of Donisthorpe, and together with Donisthorpe was transferred from Derbyshire to Leicestershire in 1897, and is now administered by North West Leicestershire District Council. The Church currently (2018) belongs to the National Forest East circuit of the Methodist Church, in their Nottingham & Derby District. However in spite of its transfer of county, with a Derbyshire postcode of "DE12" the village cannot escape entirely from its Derbyshire roots!

Denomination

Now or formerly Wesleyan Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
