This Chapel had a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1893, but we understand it was closed in 1980.

The photograph shows the site of a former Congregation Chapel, built in 1893, closed in 1980, and demolished 1986. In the present day, as can be seen, it has been replaced by Castle Street Medical Centre.

A notice of its registration for marriages, as "CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, situated at Castle-street, in the civil parish of Bolsover", was published in The London Gazette of 8th April 1902 (p.2355). An appropriate notice of the cancellation of its registration, as "BOLSOVER UNITED REFORMED CHURCH, Castle Street, Bolsover", appeared in the Gazette of 12th November 1980 (p.15711).

Derbyshire Record Office's Non-Conformist Register Guide lists it as "Castle Street Independent, later Congregational Chapel", and includes records of baptisms 1819-1836, 1925-1929, 1939-1980; marriages 1940-1976, and burials 1914-1979.

Behind the building in the photograph it is possible to see the rear of the first Chapel in the High Street that it superseded, which had remained as a Hall and Sunday School after the new building opened, and the two were linked by a connecting passageway, but this was removed when the Church was closed. There is more information about the original building ("The Old Meeting House") elsewhere in this database. Sources: David Lindley/Rosemary Lockie]

Now or formerly Congregational.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Chapel was located at OS grid reference SK4725570498. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Bolsover, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
