We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded before 1932, but we understand it was closed before 1983, and the premises are now in secular use.

Creswell's Baptist Church is best seen on Old Maps of 1961-1962, situated on the north side of Elmton Road a short distance west from its junction with John Street, between house numbers 124 and 126. It is a long, rectangular building, with a generous plot of land at the rear.

According to Kelly's Directory of 1932, it was built in 1906, originally as a Christians' Meeting House, and had seating for 180. Evidently, it was taken over by the Baptists after 1912, as Kelly's Directory of that year records it only as a Christians' Meeting House.

At first, I had thought the building had been demolished, but on closer scrutiny, I have been able to trace it in the present day. It is clearly now in private ownership, but has retained features of its former use - the cross at its apex, and windows with interlocking cross-over bars, enclosing "lancet" window panes.

To the best of my knowledge, it was never approved for marriages, and there are no records listed in Derbyshire Record Office's Non-Conformist Register Guide, so it has not been possible to determine a date of closure, other than from the observation is that it is no longer marked on Old Maps of 1983.

Now or formerly Baptist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church was located at OS grid reference SK5208774101. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:
