We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1839, though it is now closed, but we don't yet know when.

According to Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Derbyshire (1986), the chapel was built originally for Independents, but by the time of their publication had been adopted by the Methodists. It describes it as "brick with hipped slate roof, pointed-arched doorway with intersecting glazing bars in fanlight, and large date-tablet above. Three lancet windows in side walls with cast-iron frames".

The date tablet reads: "Bethel / Erected Anno Domini / 1839".

The booklet also mentions a south gallery. The British Listed Buildings website adds that it has a panelled front, and is "supported on two slender iron columns".

The earliest available Old Maps (for instance OS 1882 1:2,500) show it as Congregational, and it is recorded as such as late as Kelly's Directory of 1932 (which records an incorrect date of 1841 for its foundation). It is not known when it was taken over by the Methodists, but certainly by OS 1938 1:10,560.

There may be more information available by by selecting one or more of the accompanying images on the right.

Now or formerly Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Chapel was located at OS grid reference SK3543728510. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Barrow upon Trent, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
