We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1947, but we understand it was closed after 1995.

The Glossop Heritage Trust webpages of Glossopdale Churches and Chapels provides comprehensive coverage of churches and chapels in Glossop and surrounds. They mention a Bethel Pentecostal Chapel in High Street East, which I have now been able to locate by name on Old Maps, for instance OS 1968 1:2,500. It is squeezed into a terrace of houses, and now appears to have been absorbed back into the terrace, as there is no sign of a chapel at that location today.

Apparently the Bethel Chapel was founded in 1947, by Principal George Jeffreys. The building had been originally a corn merchant's, but had also been used previously as a billiard hall. It sounds rather impressive, having a tiled baptistry below the lower platform, and seating for 150; much of the construction work being done by members of the congregation.

It is still listed in Places recorded by the Registrar General under the provisions of the Places of Worship Registration Act of 1855 (2010) as "Free Pentecostal Church", by a congregation of the "Bible-Pattern Church Fellowship", and its position is still marked with a '+' on my Derbyshire Street Atlas of 1995, but it does now appear to have been closed.

Now or formerly Bible-Pattern Church Fellowship.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
