Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1901, and it has since been demolished, but we don't know when.

The position of this Church is as near as possible to that marked on Old Maps of 1918. The area today appears to be occupied by modern housing. It is mentioned in Kelly's Directory of 1932 as one of four other Non-conformist chapels in Shirebrook, which also had Holy Trinity parish church, and a Roman Catholic Church, dedicated to St Joseph.

Could this have been the Zion Methodist Church, mentioned in Derbyshire Record Office's Non-Conformist Register Guide as being in Main Street, and for which there are no records after 1960? And again called "Zion" on one of a set of webpages - aptly captioned "Where did we go to Church?" - in Central Drive? The latter webpage does state it closed in 1961, and it seems unlikely there would have been two churches having the same name in different streets.

"Main Street" does however appear to be the correct address, at least as far as the following notice in The London Gazette of 3rd August 1967 (p.8558) indicates:

The Registrar General, being satisfied that ZION METHODIST CHURCH, Main Street, Shirebrook, in the registration district of Chesterfield in the county of Derby, is no longer used as a place of worship by the congregation on whose behalf it was on 20th June 1932, registered for marriages in accordance with the Marriage Act, 1836, has cancelled the registration. Dated 31st July 1967.

Denomination

Now or formerly United Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

Resources

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Shirebrook, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Derbyshire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
