We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.
Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded before 1959, but we understand it was closed after 1995.

This spot is marked with a '+' on my OS Street Atlas of 1995 in the area bounded by Wood Street and Critchley Street, and Challoner's Way, and at first I was unable to identify it.
However, help was at hand. Places recorded by the Registrar General under the provisions of the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855 (2010) list an Assembly of God Church in Critchley Street; and with the assistance of Old Maps, I have now been able to find the building in the present day. OS 1959 1:2,500 is particularly helpful, as it names it as "Bethshan Tabernacle", and confirms an Assembly of God congregation.
It still retains a church-like appearance, including the cross to the right of the entrance, but it is now Trinity ABC Boxing Club.
An Assemblies of God congregation have been meeting at the Arena Church in Rutland Street since 1994; possibly this was their former premises; their church is also recorded in the Registrar's List, under the title "The Arena, Home Of Ilkeston Christian Centre".

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

Search Tips:

You can specify either a Place, or OS Grid Reference to search for. When you specify a Place, only entries for that place will be returned, with Places of Worship listed in alphabetical order. If you specify a Grid Reference, Places of Worship in the immediate vicinity will be listed, in order of distance from the Grid Reference supplied. The default is to list 10, but you can specify How Many you want to see, up to a maximum of 100.

You can restrict the search to classes of Denomination. The exact denomination is always shown in the results, although the search is for broad types. Thus you can search for 'Methodist', but not 'Wesleyan Methodist' or 'Primitive Methodist'. 'Multi-denominational' includes Ecumenical Partnerships, and 'Miscellaneous' means anything not covered by other broad classes.
