We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1873, and we understand it is still open.

This building is shown on the earliest Old Map available to me, OS 1882 1:2,500, labelled as "Methodist Chapel (Primitive)". It has a three bay front, with a round-arched doorway (no porch), and two long round-arched windows on either side, each with a fan-light. Above the doorway, but below the tops of the windows, is a three-light Venetian style window - most unusual. Above this is a lozenge-shaped plaque, which unfortunately is weather-worn, and no longer readable.

According to a "Warmley Historical Timeline 1086-1999" in Paul Townsend's Flickr Photostream, "Oldland Methodist Church" (in West Street) opened in 1873. It is on the corner of West Street and the next turning on the left north of Court Road. The latter is also named West Street, and is a no-through-road.

Evidently "cottage" meetings predated the opening of a dedicated building, as a return to the Religious Census of 1851 (HO 129/327/2/2/14) exists for a congregation of Primitive Methodists in Oldland Common who worshipped in shared premises at which an estimated 70 worshippers met on March 30 that year. The return was competed by Edward Horsey, its Minister, who lived at "Upper Easton, Bristol, Gloucestershire".

The Church's website says "Unity Oldland Methodist Church" was formed in 2004. This suggests other Methodist Church(es) in the area were closed prior to this date, and their congregations joined with this one, though there is no mention of this on the website.

Now or formerly Primitive Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church is located at OS grid reference ST6723171527. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Oldland Common, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
