Cemeteries

This Church has (or had) a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1724, and we understand it is still open.

This is a very elegant building, designed perfectly to fit in with what - one imagines - were the grand wool merchant's houses on either side of it, set back from the Lower High Street. It has two storeys, with 2 gables at the front, one of three bays, and one of a single bay with entrance doorway. The lower floor in the larger gable has 3 2-light windows, whilst the upper floor has a single central window with 3 lights. The window surrounds are unusual - described in Non-Conformist Chapels and Meeting Houses, Gloucestershire (1986) as having angular heads and stop-chamfered jambs. Kelly's Directory of 1923 says it was erected in 1872 and cost "upwards of £1,300, will seat about 300, and has a school, minister's residence, and burying ground at the back [and] it was entirely renovated in 1893".

The inscription over the door reads "God is a Spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth - John IV.24" - for which see this photograph of Chipping Campden Baptist Church on the Geograph website.

The 1872 building replaced an earlier building, which according to the Church's website was for a congregation formed in 1724. It was closed for a few years whilst the new church was built, to a design by T.T. Allen.

According to Old Maps, the Burial Ground was at the rear of the Baptist Chapel plot, facing Back Ends. It appears now to have been cleared.

Denomination

Now or formerly Particular Baptist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Gloucestershire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
