Cemeteries

We believe the Church did NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1859, but we understand it was closed before 1953.

"St Raphael's Church, Cumberland-road, is a very handsome edifice, erected in 1859 at the sole expense of the Rev. Robert H.W. Miles, rector of Bingham, Notts. It is in the early Decorated style, and cost, including six almshouses for aged seamen, which adjoin it, £8000. It was intended chiefly for the use of the sailors of the port of Bristol." [Extract from Webster & Co.'s Postal and Commercial Directory of the City of Bristol, and County of Glamorgan, 1865]

St Raphael's is also mentioned on Phil Draper's ChurchCrawler website. He says it was built 1853-59 by Henry Woodyear, and was closed in 1878 following disapproval of the bishop, and not reopened until 1893. It was again closed and became part of a factory in 1953, then demolished the following year. To assist in locating it, he points out that a fragment of it still survives, caught in between two blocks of flats.

The Bristol Town Plan of 1885 shows a rectangular building, with a small buttressed chancel. To the west were St Raphael's Almshouses, and to the east was St Raphael's House of Charity, which had a separate Chapel.

Denomination

Now or formerly Church of England.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.

Please choose a County by selecting one of the Tabs below.
Note: you MUST choose a County - searching all four at once is not an option!

You can further refine your search by supplying other search terms.

Please note the above provides a search of selected fields in the Gloucestershire section of the Places of Worship Database on this site (churchdb.gukutils.org.uk) only. For other counties, or for a full search of the Database, you might like to try the site's Google Custom Search, which includes full webpage content.
