Cemeteries We believe the Chapel did NOT have a graveyard. Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all. Church History This Place of Worship was founded before 1881, but we understand it was closed before 1974. An Independent Chapel at this location was first noted on Old Maps of 1881-1886. By 1974-1979 it is labelled as "Chapel Cottage", so obviously in private occupation by then. It is rectangular, with a steep sloping roof, and two tiers of windows, in the style typical of Cotswold cottages. The only suggestion that it may have once been a place of worship is a walled-up louvre in the gable, and signs that indicate it may once have had a porch over the central entrance doorway.. Note: Little Compton was transferred from Gloucestershire to Warwickshire by the "Counties (Detached Parts)" Act of 1844. At the time of the Religious Census of 1851, it was in the registration district of Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire (HO 129/162), however neither the Independent Chapel, nor Salem Baptist Chapel in Little Compton, appear to have been recorded. • You can restrict the search to classes of Denomination. The exact denomination is always shown in the results, although the search is for broad types. 'Multi-denominational' includes Ecumenical Partnerships, and 'Miscellaneous' means anything not covered by other broad classes.
