Cemeteries

We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1892, and we understand it is still open.

"Horfield Baptist Church has one of the best facades in north Bristol" - so says Phil Draper, on his ChurchCrawler website. It was built for a congregation founded in 1892, whose first meeting place was a tin tabernacle. Its first members were from Broadmead Baptist Church, and in 1896, they built "a pretty little chapel" which was designed for them by H.J. Jones. The latter survives now as one of the Church Halls adjacent to the present building.

It has a large central pointed-arched window of twelve lights above a wide central entrance, flanked by a pair of towers, with separate entrances. Not surprisingly, it is featured on the British Listed Buildings website - where it is described as having "a well-detailed front on a prominent site.

Its registration for marriages was recorded by following notice in The London Gazette of 24th December 1901 (p.9082):

NOTICE is hereby given, that a separate building, named Baptist Church, situate at Gloucester-road, Bishopston, in the civil parish of Bristol, in the county borough of Bristol, in the registration district of Bristol, being a building certified according to law as a place of meeting for religious worship, was on the eighteenth day of December, 1901, duly registered for solemnizing marriages therein, pursuant to the Act of 6th and 7th Wm. 4, c.85, being substituted for the building named Horfield Baptist Schoolroom, situate at Brynland-avenue, Bristol, now disused. Dated 19th December 1901.

Denomination

Now or formerly Baptist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.
