We believe the Church does NOT have a graveyard.

Note: any church within an urban environment may have had its graveyard closed after the Burial Act of 1853. Any new church built after that is unlikely to have had a graveyard at all.

Church History

This Place of Worship was founded in 1892, and we understand it is still open.

This chapel is aligned north-south, and lies parallel to, and set back from Soundwell Road. The front can be reached via a 'jennel' from the road, or by a path across a lawned area - "quite a small chapel with a porch and large round headed windows" and "tucked away from the corner Soundwell Road in a small garden" is how Phil Draper, on his ChurchCrawler website, and a "rather pretty building". He also notes it dates from 1892.

Better views of it are either Bing 'Birds Eye' view, or via Google StreetView from Seymour Road, where it can be seen to have a central entrance, on either side of which are round-arched windows. Above them is a group of 4 rectangular windows, and there are similar windows in the side.

The following notice in The London Gazette of 22nd September 1953 (p.5067) indicates its registration for marriages:

A Building certified for worship named BETHESDA INDEPENDENT METHODIST CHURCH, Soundwell Road, Staple Hill, Mangotsfield, in the registration district of Kingswood, in the county of Gloucester, was on 16th September, 1953, registered for solemnising marriages therein pursuant to section 41 of the Marriage Act, 1949. Dated 19th September 1953.

It is now (2014) one of only two remaining Independent Methodist Churches in the Bristol area. The other is in Mill Lane, Warmley, for which see elsewhere in this database.

Now or formerly Independent Methodist.

If more than one congregation has worshipped here, or its congregation has united with others, in most cases this will record its original dedication.

This Church is located at OS grid reference ST6493175830. You can see this on various mapping systems. Note all links open in a new window:

I have found many websites of use whilst compiling the information for this database. Here are some which deserve mention as being of special interest for Staple Hill, Mangotsfield, and perhaps to Local History and Places of Worship as a whole.

The above links were selected and reviewed at the time I prepared the information, but please be aware their content may vary, or disappear entirely. These factors are outside my control.
